On the eve of the release of Guv’ner’s second L.P., the Hunt, I find myself once again in the position of telling you a little something about the people behind the music. Pumpkin and Charles were meant to make music together. Indulge me for a second as we travel back into the past to examine the path that led them to form Guv’ner. As a young lad, Charles directed himself and his friends in music videos, tackling such heavy weights as The Knack, Devo and well, The Knack. Young Pumpkin chose quotes for her yearbook page from the Tom Tom Club and the Police (boldly taking from the Zenyatta Mondatta album in the era of Synchronicity!). While Pumpkin was studying the fine art of dance (the whirling dervish) at The University of Colorado at Boulder, is it merely coincidence that Charles was in a hippie coffee house band at New York University. Add to this that they share the same birthday and are both well-endowed, and I believe you have a band that was destined to be.

So much has happened since the release of their first L.P., Hard for Measy for You and the flurry of singles that followed. They were Drew Barrymore’s favorite band for about five minutes. They traveled widely and this wanderlust infects the new record. Charles got a job editing on the Lauren Hutton talk show which, like Drew’s affections, also lasted about five minutes. Pumpkin has abandoned her entrepreneurial ambitions to start a gourmet doughnut shop called Pumkin’ Donuts, to pursue her true fortune in tile-making (hence the YMCA pottery course.) More importantly, they acquired a drummer, a fabulously young classically trained percussionist, who I know only as “Danny”. What I do know is that Danny has left the timpanis behind and provided the band with some new found oomph and he’s here to stay (at least for the moment). There was another addition to the Guv’ner family as well, they were lucky to have Don Flemming volunteer to work his magic. They may have chosen initially to record at the Rare Book Room out of necessity - they wanted a bigger sound, there weren’t enough chairs at cafe Cognac, but it soon proved to be a wise choice - Nicolas the owner/engineer is sort of French, it had a big screen t.v./video, a nice leather couch for me to sit on while Don helmed the board, a wide range of restaurants to take out from and of course, that big sound. I think the album turned out quite nicely and I hope you do too.

Sincerely, Julia Cafritz
